How to bring in extra taste into your coffee at no extra cost?
You might have had coffee umpteen times: in a restaurant or canteen while talking to your friends, in an official meeting seriously discussing the company issues, in your cabin busy with your laptop, at home thinking of your child's schooling and in so many other situations.
In all these situations, your focus is not coffee but something else. Most of the times you are not even aware that you are drinking cofee. Let us observe the way you drank your cofee. Ask youself a few questions like:
- Was the coffee served in a plastic cup, paper cup or a ceramic one?
- What was the colour of the cup?
- What was the colour of the coffee? Was it of the usual colour, darker or lighter?
- Was the sugar content normal, more or less?
- How was its aroma?
- Was it very hot, comfortably hot or cold?
- Did you really enjoy drinking it? Or was it a routine?
You may not be able to answer any or all the questions satisfactorily.
Why?
Because, as pointed out before, your focus was not coffee but something else. You did not enjoy drinking it.
Instead, try this: Your objective is to drink coffee and nothing else. Just forget all other things and focus on the present objective-drinking coffee. You sit relaxed, sip it leisurely and enjoy the taste of every sip. Be aware of everything about what you are doing.
Do you notice the difference? (Previously, it was mechanical. It was the time to have coffee, so you had. You did it as a routine.)
You will not enjoy if you do it as a routine. The way to do things is, be aware of it. Awareness is different from alertness. Alertness involves tension. Awareness is alertness without tension. When you are aware of what you are doing, every bit of it is savoured by the body, senses and mind.
This is true even in your job. Be aware of what you are doing, every second. Awareness avoids multi-tasking and allows you to concentrate on the present task. It creates involvement. It creates interest and innovation. You enjoy the task. When you enjoy your task, you will not feel tired. You are so involved in it, you will not notice how time slipped. Only when you are bored, you will look at the watch. You will wait for the clock to strike. You wait to run out of that place. You think of ways to escape.
There are other bonuses coming along with awareness. When your mind is filled with what you are doing at present, it is focussed in that single task. It does not wander away into any other thoughts.
Many accidents happen when you are absent minded, which means, the mind is wandering and you are not fully aware of the task on hand. Very often, people sprain the muscles while lifting an object or run into similar accidents. In majority of the cases, it happens because their mind was pre-occupied and not aware of the act. Be aware of the task on hand- that you are lifting the weight or walking down the stairs. Then you will adopt the right posture to do it, thus preventing injury.
The world is full of interesting things. Only you should be aware of them. There is plenty to learn and enjoy. So be aware of what you are doing, be aware of the world around you - every moment. Life will be wonderful.
